“The art of stone carving is the meeting of heart, hands and mind.”
About Us
Danny Stimson is a City & Guilds qualified stone mason (to Craft and Advanced Craft level). After completing a three year stone masonry apprenticeship with English Heritage, he moved to The Cathedral Works in Chichester, where he worked for eight years during which time he also undertook a year-long carving course with the City & Guilds Art College in London.
Danny has stone carvings on some of the most historic buildings in the country including: Chichester Cathedral; The Houses of Parliament; The Guildhall, London; and The British Museum – to name a few.
Over the past 20 years, since leaving Chichester, Danny has undertaken stone carvings for various private and public art commissions. These include: Rylstone Gardens; Sainsbury's Sculpture Walk; Play Lane Open Space; and The Chines Project.
Learn to carve stone
Come with an idea or just use one of our carving test pieces, to learn the traditional craft and art of the stone carver.
Stone carving is a unique craft due to the nature of the material used. Carving 150 million year old limestone is a wonderful and fulfilling experience – whatever your skill level.
We can offer teaching for all abilities from the complete beginner, to an experienced artisan looking to further their knowledge.

We supply the stone, tools and equipment required (you just bring your enthusiasm). Each course can be tailored to your requirements, for either Stone Carving, Letter Cutting or Traditional Masonry – or a mix of everything on the four day course.

“Sometime ago, someone once asked me how I do what I do in stone? The best explanation I could give was, ‘I see the stone carving in my head and then I take away the bits of stone I don’t want… simple!’”

Private Art Commissions
The private stone carving and letter cutting commissions I’ve undertaken to date include, a replica of a Chymira Gargoyle from the Houses of Parliament. various headstones and house name plaques. If you have an idea, I can carve it from stone. Gargoyles and Grotesques are my favoured subject, but I will carve in stone anything you can imagine – alternatively you could come and have a go yourself and I’ll help you with the stone carving techniques.
Public Art Commissions
To date I have undertaken seven public art commissions. These include Sainsbury’s Sculpture Park (History Man), Rylestone Gardens (Horse Chestnut) and The Chines Project (Whale, Smuggler and Lifeboat seats). In addition, during 2001, Alan Titchmarsh opened the Playstreet Lane Sculpture (Oak Leaf and Points of the Compass). The public art commissions I have undertaken really showcase The Art of Stone – something I am passionate about.
